Type of work: glass Business Name: Copeland Glass Although it may seem
like an odd source, I draw inspiration for my work in glass from textiles
of all sorts. Perhaps this is because I was a handspinner before I began
working in glass. One piece may reflect the undulating color changes of
an ikat warp; another, the rich exuberance of a silk crazy quilt. I am
a juried member of the New Hampshire League of Craftsmen and a two time
winner of the Leagues Stevens Glass Award. I live in Manchester,
NH where I teach at the Currier Museum Art Center and serve as one of
the ministers at the First Congregational Church.
Description of work All of my glass pieces are created in a kiln. Many begin with my signature worka hand-etched dichroic glass inclusion. Dichroic glass is coated with many thin layers of quartz crystals or metal oxides applied in a vacuum chamber. These layers create an optical effect that gives the glass its distinctive flash and sparkle. I draw on the glass with a resist medium and acid-etch to remove some of the coating. Next, I select and cut companion glasses and then fire the assembled piece at a temperature nearing 1500 degrees. A second firing over special molds is used to shape tableware pieces.
Price range $14 to $400.00
