Type of work: weaving

Business Name: The Antique Loom

I have been a weaver for over 25 years. my first loom was hand made and about 75 years old when purchased. And thus the name of my business became, The Antique Loom. That first loom and others have been sold over the years until now my primary loom is computer assisted.

Over the years I have worked with a number of fibers, beginning with alpaca, weaving scarves for men, an item that seemed lacking in handwovens. Over time I have woven with brushed mohair and wool, silk and wool, rayon and silk, rayon chenille, and finally have ventured into very fine silk.

I began by consigning my work, and gradually began to develop a wholesale business until I acquired a sales rep to build my wholesale business. I've also sold at various arts and craft shows.

I have woven for numerous shops throughout New England and have sold in New Orleans La, The Talbot's catalogue and stores, Niemann Marcus in Beverly Hills and to Bon Wit Teller stores around the country and Henri Bendel in NYC.

For many years I combined the full time work of a social worker and that of a weaver. Then I had the solicitude of a weaver balanced by the people filled life of social worker. Now the people world is filled in other ways as I devote full time to weaving.

I am a member of The Weavers Guild of Boston and The Handweavers Guild of America.

Description of work

For quite a while my work was mainly stoles and scarves. Later I ventured into place mats and handbag fabric. Now I have begun to move into garments—vests and jackets, and doing some commission work. My main focus has been as a colorist with very simple structure. More recently my work with fine silks shows the strong emphasis of the colorist but combined with subtle but complex patterning, thanks to that wonderful device, the computer assisted loom. The road traveled has been from the anique hand made loom to the computer assisted loom.

Color Wheel Scarf
solid color silk

The warp is created by combining three strands of silk to create one weaving thread.
These may be three shades of a color or three different colors or any combination of these. As the warp is created gradually one strand is dropped
and another added. In this manner it is possible to gradually move around the color wheel. The scarf is woven in the same manner, gradually dropping a
strand and adding another. The process of creating these scarves is a very slow process.
