Dinner plate with West African bird

Type of work: ceramics

I'm a potter who finds inspiration in the back corners of museums and in travels to remote places. My pottery forms come from the unfailing shapes of simple functional ware, but my surface designs come from animal images on petroglyphs, wood carvings and fabric paintings of traditional Native American and African cultures.

Description of work

I make functional stoneware for daily use: plates, bowls, cups, and platters. All are lead free and dishwasher and microwave safe. I'm currently combining several glaze styles and about a dozen different animal images into my work. I may be jealous of weavers who see their colors while they work, but I'm forever in awe of what fire does to clay. I depend on the flames in the kiln to produce color variations from piece to piece.
