Since the late 1980s, I have created several bodies of work that aim at evoking a sense of connectedness with, and reverence for, the natural world. My work includes gel-print monotypes and porcelain jewelry (both of which are exhibited in Sign of the Dove Holiday Artisans' Cooperative), as well as abstract, figurative, and portraiture sculpture and, most recently, concept-based installations and videos. The bird imagery in my monotypes symbolizes freedom. My jewelry designs are inspired by nature in all its wondrous complexity of sky, land, water, and the fire of the living Earth. It is through the process of sculpting, glazing, and firing that I attempt to instill each piece of my jewelry with my feelings about nature. Monotypes are unique prints. I create my monotypes by using an organic substance, gelatin, as the printing plate. The image is painted in its entirety with water-based monotype inks and then transferred onto the paper in one step. This process creates only one image per plate. My porcelain jewelry--earrings, pins, and necklaces--is fired several times and, to achieve hardness and durability, it is fired to 2400 degrees. The precious metals--24-karat gold, platinum, and copper--are applied before the last firing to accent and infuse the pieces with a lustrous finish. All my designs are original and one-of-a-kind.
